Terrazzo
Types of Stone – Terrazzo
Terrazzo is a unique stone option. This type of flooring has gained popularity in recent years. If your terrazzo flooring needs care, trust Sydney Stone Polishing to restore the life of your terrazzo.
What is Terrazzo
Terrazzo is a composite of many different stones set into cement. This is poured into place for walls or flooring and contains bits of quartz, glass, granite, or marble. Other chips can be sprinkled on top of the flooring before it sets, and metal strips may separate sections of flooring.
Ancient History
Terrazzo has been used since ancient times. While it is present in Egyptian mosaics, it is most known as Venetian pavement in Italy. Before the invention of metal dividers and the electric grinder, terrazzo was not in wide use due to its tendency to crack.
Replacing Terrazzo
Whether it is due to cracking or erosion from acid, terrazzo occasionally needs to be replaced. In order to do this, the affected section must be cut out. The material itself does not usually crack or erode, but the structural support or binding resin is usually what is affected.
Why Use Terrazzo Flooring?
Terrazzo flooring used to be a popular option, but then materials such as carpet and hardwood appeared. Now, terrazzo is seeing a renewal of interest. The designs are unique and very aesthetically appealing. It is mold resistant, low maintenance, and retains heat well. This type of stone is also very durable.
